Cutting unit set up and sharpening techniques

The only grinder manufacturer approved class on the market, this one‑day practical, hands‑on class will provide an understanding of the principles of cutting units. Focusing on maintenance regimes, learn the fundamentals of using grinders to get the best out of your mowers, to ensure the highest quality of cut all year round. A combination of demonstrations and hands on participation will provide a practical learning experience for all.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the relationship between bedknife and cylinder, including correct angles and grinding techniques (spin and relief)
  • Perform best practices in cutting unit maintenance, including disassembly, reassembly, mounting, and zero‑contact setup
  • Accurately set and adjust mowing equipment, including height of cut, paralleling units, and avoiding common pitfalls
  • Recognise the agronomic and economic impact of quality of cut and communicate the value of maintenance facilities to stakeholders

This class is being held at the Bernhard Academy at Moortown. Transport to and from the Academy will be provided from Harrogate Convention Centre. Please wear suitable workwear and safety boots.

Barry began his career as a greenkeeper before qualifying as a golf course mechanic in 1991. Throughout his career, he has worked with industry-leading brands such as Toro and Bernhard and Company, as well as running businesses specialising in golf equipment sales, hire and service. Passionate about education and professional development, Barry founded the Irish School of Turf Mechanic to provide specialised training for sports turf professionals. He is a familiar face on the tournament support circuit, having contributed to prestigious events including the Ryder Cup and Walker Cup.
