Ecology versus the golf course (NEW)

9:00AM - 5:00PM, 22 Jan 2024

There is a lot of talk about ecology and sustainability on the golf course, but what does this really mean? In this class the objective is to define what we mean by ‘ecology’ and ‘sustainability’ and further explore the topic. Why after 30 years of effort do so many courses still offer poor ecology outcomes? Why are some golfers and clubs ‘tone deaf’ on this topic and how can we lift the profile of the industry through ecological good practice and then get recognised for it? What can be done to assess your course and measure its current status? Who can be a key driver and ally in the effort to enhance ecological outcomes on your course? How do you keep it real and consistent by ensuring objectives are possible and sustainable? When is it possible to change manage the process of ecological improvement (awareness is the driver of change)? How to avoid limiting factors to good ecological potential being achieved by setting policies and practices to make a difference. The class will seek to discuss ecological principles as well as real world practical situations with group work and engagement. The class will be lively and not everyone will agree, but that doesn’t matter as it is the process as much as the outcome that is important.
