Enhancing turfgrass defences (NEW)

9:30AM - 12:30PM, 22 Jan 2024

This class will examine the differences between abiotic and biotic stress and how they affect turfgrass growth and quality. Dr John Dempsey will describe the complex mechanisms of turfgrass responses to these challenges. A major part of the class will focus upon the role of elicitors, the initial line of defences such as the hypersensitive response, generation of antimicrobial compounds and defence signalling that leads to long term disease. John will explain how these responses can be enhanced by means of ‘defence activators’ and various cultural practices.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand abiotic and biotic stresses and the ways turfgrasses respond to them
  • Knowledge of the infection process and how the ‘disease pyramid’ is used to reduce disease
  • How defence activators can reduce disease incidences and help responses to abiotic stress
  • Recognise differences between abiotic and biotic stress and how cultural practices can help
  • Understand that stress responses require resources and a balanced nutritional programme is important
  • Knowledge to incorporate defence activators into nutrient programmes
