How to create timeless green complexes

Timeless designs are those that look fresh and new and don’t look dated and tired; they must be functional and sensible to have staying power. This class will focus on all the variables that enable complexes to better stand the test of time. These variables range from architectural features and design, microclimates, traffic levels and flow to grass selection and promotion of grasses that deliver on performance. It will also cover the level of aesthetic quality and interest necessary to satisfy classic designs.

Stephen Ridgway

Senior Design Consultant STRI Group

Stephen assists clients with the development of new golf facilities as well as remodelling, restoring or renovating existing ones. His background in science as well as his love of art combine to produce attractive, engaging and playable golf courses that sit sustainably in their surroundings and communities.

Prior to joining STRI, Stephen ran his own consultancy business, Ridgway Golf Design Ltd, and before that worked for 12 years at Weller Designs Ltd. He has been involved in the planning, design and construction of Boundary Lakes golf course at The Ageas Bowl and had a hand in renovation works at Nefyn GC, Pyle and Kenfig GC, Hankley Common GC and St.Enodoc GC.

Stephen has a MSc in Golf Course Architecture and is a member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA) and has worked as a golf course architect for over 18 years on projects of varying scale and complexity.

Senior Agronomist STRI

Conor has 30 years of experience in the sports turf industry. He joined the STRI in 2001 as a Sports Turf Agronomist from a background in golf design and construction. Based in Ireland he provides consultancy to golf clubs in Ireland and in an array of countries in Europe extending from Sweden to Portugal. 

He has also developed into a multifaceted consultant with specialisms in contract management, maintenance contract specifications, tendering documents and winter games pitch projects together with grow-ins. He can offer agronomic advice on both established and infant sport surfaces ensuring all works including feasibility studies are carried out to meet the client’s requirements.

His widespread golf experience at the frontier of change has culminated in co-authoring of, “A best management handbook for managing parkland greens”, under the R&A’s Golf Course 2030 initiative.

Conor has been an avid sportsman (soccer and golf) from an early age. It is his passion for sport that has driven his will to succeed and to raise standards.
