Proactive overseeding for golf greens

11 ‑ 11.45am

The future of disease management is reliant on frequent overseeding using resilient and disease-resistent bentgrass cultivars. With the loss of curative fungicides, it has never been more important to ensure we are managing grasses that are the most resistant to disease, whilst being able to perform under the stresses of modern greens management. This seminar will explore methods and techniques to effectively win the battle against Poa annua to achieve the aim of more disease resistant and sustainable greens that offer greater playability.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Techniques and timing for effective overseeding of bentgrass
  • Bentgrass varietal and species traits
  • How maintaining a greater percentage of bentgrass can prevent disease

With almost 30-years’ experience in the amenity, turfgrass and landscaping sectors, Richard Brown is well known to greenkeepers across the UK. His career in the amenity sector started at the tender age of 14 when he began working at a Lincolnshire plant nursery.  He subsequently left school at 16 to work in the landscaping sector in the north east of England before going to university to earn a degree in horticulture.  He then went on to work on a turf farm before working for two years in Australia.

Richard joined Germinal in 2002 and, with a wealth of sector-specific experience, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s amenity business: from working with growers to plan the production of UK-grown grass seed crops, to liaising with the breeding programme at IBERS (Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences) and overseas seed breeders to select and develop new and exciting grass cultivars.

Richard is FACTS (Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) qualified and will happily talk at length about how to get the best results from golf and sports pitch specific grass seed mixtures.
