Soil surfactants (NEW)

1:30PM - 5:00PM, 22 Jan 2024

When it comes to managing water on golf courses, soil surfactants (wetting agents) are used for critical roles including reducing localised dry spot, improving moisture uniformity and enhancing water infiltration and retention in the rootzone. However, as the number of available products has grown, so has the confusion around them. Active ingredients can be difficult to discern, while marketing claims such as the ability to move water, remove hydrophobic coatings from soil particles and provide efficacy over extended periods are all common. Where do these claims come from and what is the scientific basis? This class is intended to move beyond the marketing and understand the data.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the chemistry of soil surfactants and how structural changes relate to functional differences
  • Clarify marketing terminology such as ‘penetrant’ and ‘retainer’
  • How adjusting application rates and timings can alter efficacy and longevity
  • The role weather and cultural management play in performance
  • Make informed decisions with regards to purchasing, application and evaluation

Daniel O’Brien is a PhD student working for Dr. Mike Richardson at the University of Arkansas. His research focuses largely on soil surfactants – investigating different active ingredients and application strategies. Additionally, he works with precision agriculture technologies and adapting their use for turfgrass management.

Originally from Birmingham, AL, he received his BS from Auburn University and spent eight years in sports turf management before joining the Arkansas Turfgrass Research Program. He earned his MS working for Dr. Doug Karcher studying technologies for putting green management while also serving as research technician, managing all putting greens at the Milo J. Shult Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Fayetteville, AR. Daniel currently resides in Siloam Springs, AR with wife Jacquelyn and three children: Maggie, Jack, and Ellie.
