Turfgrass disease research in grass breeding and cultivar development

Hall 3 Seminar Theatre A
12:00PM - 12:45PM, 20 Jan 2026

This seminar will present how to create a new a new variety of turfgrass the needs of the superintendent. During the seminar, we will discuss disease research in turfgrass breeding to improve tolerance to diseases such as dollar spot, grey leaf spot and other major diseases in turf. We will also look at drought tolerance of grass species used for turf and will present the work done by Barenbrug to make turf grass more sustainable and adaptable to current and future environmental issues.

Learning outcomes:

  •  Learn about how breeding can improve and adapted turf grasses
  • Learn about turf grass diseases and breeding for improved cultivars
  • Learn about turf grass species vs disease susceptibility
  • Learn about drought tolerance and water requirement of turf grass species

Turf Breeder/Research manager Barenbrug

Stephane Charrier, I am responsible for the turf breeding program for Barenbrug in Europe since 2011. I also have the position of research manager for Barenbrug France, since 2017. After finishing my studies in France in 2000, I went to work as a grass breeder in New Zealand from 2001 until 2011. I was working on forage and turf grasses. For turf, I was breeding mainly ryegrass, fine fescue and Agrostis sp. and some tall fescue for the Australian market. I am currently based in the South of France near Toulouse and managing the turf breeding program for Barenbrug Europe based at two locations: south of France and The Netherlands. I am working on improving turf grasses for the use in sport, golf and landscape. The main subject of research are disease tolerance, drought tolerance, low input tolerance and adaptation to the needs of the end users: golf course superintendent and sport field managers.
